A week after NXT held it’s own pay-per-view special in TakeOver: In Your House, WWE will have it’s own PPV with Backlash. This will be the 15th Backlash pay-per-view in company history. The last Backlash took place in May 2018 and it is largely considered one of the worst WWE pay-per-views in recent history and the company hopes that the 2020 edition will be better.
Eight matches will take place on the card with six titles on the line and a non-title match being named the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”. Here are my predictions for each match heading into Sunday night.
Jeff Hardy vs. Sheamus
Prediction: Jeff Hardy wins
If WWE continues these plans to push Hardy in order to keep him around, it would make sense for him to win here. I’ve been on the fence on the company using someone’s past real-life issues in storylines but if that person is okay with it, then go for it. For here, I see this as more of a one-off type match where Hardy wins to continue the momentum and moving him into a potential title picture.
Edge vs. Randy Orton
Prediction: Randy Orton wins
I really thought that this was going to be a one-time match at WrestleMania but here we are with these two colliding in what is now called “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”. A tagline like this can hurt that match since we will now have a lot of expectations for it but if anyone on the current roster can pull this off, I would say it’d be the guy’s picture (add the likes of Daniel Bryan, Cesaro, and AJ Styles).
Since Edge won the first match, I have Orton winning here in this singles match as it looks as will see this feud continue a little longer, possibly at SummerSlam. If fans are allowed for that, what a way to end that feud.
Raw Tag Team Championship – The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) (c) vs. War Raiders (Erik and Ivar)
Prediction: The Street Profits retain the Raw Tag Team Championship
After weeks of non-wrestling match segments which included basketball games and bowling, we will finally see these two teams battle it out in the ring. Given that Street Profits have not defended the title in quite some time, I’m giving Ford and Dawkins the win here to retain the titles. Plus, there is not a lot of talent in the tag division on Raw, so have them keep the titles for now until an established team is developed.
Women’s Tag Team Championship – Bayley and Sasha Banks (c) vs. Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross vs. The IIconics (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce)
Prediction: Bayley and Sasha Banks retain the Women’s Tag Team Championship
An interesting point to add here. The winners here will face Tegan Nox and Shotzi Blackheart for the tag titles on NXT. My theory here is that Banks and Bayley retain, given that they just won the titles, and have them drop the titles on NXT. It sets up two things: 1) A starting point to the Banks vs. Bayley feud we have been waiting for and 2) The NXT women’s division will have more titles to fight for. The women’s division on the yellow brand has a lot more depth and some potential teams, unlike Raw and SmackDown.
United States Championship – Apollo Crews (c) vs. Andrade
Prediction: Apollo Crews retains the United State Championship
After a long time in the company, Crews won his first-ever title in WWE a few weeks ago in the U.S. title on an episode of Raw. Crews has been getting a huge push as of late and I think there is no reason for it to stop so soon. Have him win against an established guy like Andrade and there is A TON of talent for him to go up against down the line.
Raw Women’s Championship – Asuka (c) vs. Nia Jax
Prediction: Asuka retains the Raw Women’s Championship
WWE did it right in transitioning the women’s title from Becky Lynch to Asuka via Money in the Bank. Asuka has been excellent as of late in this sort of pandemic era in WWE. I don’t see her dropping the title so soon. Jax will be dominant here but I have Asuka winning it at the last second.
Universal Championship – Braun Strowman (c) vs. The Miz and John Morrison in a 2-on-1 Handicap match
Prediction: Braun Strowman retains the Universal Championship
If you know me you know I am not a fan of the handicap stipulation in a singles title match. Miz and Morrison have been pulling these childish pranks on Strowman for the past few weeks and I think The Monster Among Men will get his revenge here in dominant fashion. No reason to take the belt of Strowman so soon after winning it not too long ago.
WWE Championship – Drew McIntyre vs. Bobby Lashley
Prediction: Drew McIntyre retains the WWE Championship
I have a feeling that this feud will last past Backlash here. There is no reason to take the belt of McIntyre so soon but it’ll be interesting to see how Lashley’s new manager, MVP will play a part in this. This should be a good match but has more of a predictable outcome.
The last Backlash received a lot of negative reviews but the 2020 edition looks like a solid card on paper. The title matches will be fun to watch but it’ll be interesting to see how The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever will turn out.
