Ah, yes, my favorite (and probably yours too) WWE event, the Royal Rumble. WWE will have its first network event which is set to take place at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX. Eight matches are set to take place, with four title matches and of course, two royal rumble matches.

You know the deal with the RR by now. Two superstars start in the ring and every 90 seconds, a new superstar will enter. This will happen until all 30 have entered and the only way to win is to throw your opponent over the top rope. The last person in the match will earn a championship match at WrestleMania.

The Road to WrestleMania starts now. Enough of the chit chat, it’s time for my predictions on the card.

Shorty G vs. Sheamus

Prediction: Sheamus wins

Sheamus made his return a few weeks ago after coming back from multiple injuries. The time away has helped him and looks to be in line for some sort of push. He has been on a tear since coming back and that looks to be the case as I think he’ll beat Chad Gable (still not calling him Shorty G).

Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin in a Falls Count Anywhere match

Prediction: Roman Reigns wins

A long going feud that fans are tired of. These guys have gone after each other for the past few weeks and I think it is best if the face in Reigns gets the victory here to end it. Will likely see the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Robert Roode, and The Usos get involved in some sort of way.

United States Championship – Andrade (c) vs. Humberto Carrillo

Prediction: Andrade retains the United States Championship

Carrillo recently came back to Raw to seek revenge against Andrade after disrespecting Rey Mysterio in ripping off his mask. Raw is keen on making Carrillo a star but I think playing hot potato with the US title is not a good call right now, given Andrade is also a rising star in the company. They have great chemistry in their recent matches and it should be a good one but with a predictable outcome.

SmackDown Women’s Championship – Bayley (c) vs. Lacey Evans

Prediction: Bayley retains the SmackDown Women’s Championship

Evans recently turned face here and looks to down Bayley as they have gone after each other in recent weeks. Bayley has done well as the heel champion and I think her retaining here goes with my prediction for the Women’s Royal Rumble.

Raw Women’s Championship – Becky Lynch (c) vs. Asuka

Prediction: Asuka wins the Raw Women’s Championship

Hear me out. Lynch and Asuka have been a solid feud thus far, with Lynch making a point that she has never beaten Asuka. My idea here is that Asuka wins the belt (which she more than deserves) and have Lynch chase for the title once again and possibly beating her, maybe at WrestleMania. A bold prediction but regardless, they put on an excellent match last year at the Royal Rumble and that could be the case once again.

Universal Championship – “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Daniel Bryan in a Strap match

Prediction: “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt retains the Universal Championship

A cool stipulation in which we haven’t seen in over a decade. A strap match is basically where both superstars are tied together with a strap, therefore not allowing the superstars to be separated. The strap itself can be used as a weapon.

“The Fiend” still is one of the hottest acts in the company and I don’t think he should drop the title anytime soon. Bryan has done an incredible job as the babyface trying to take down the monster in Wyatt. I think Wyatt retaining here would be the right call and would be in a better spot if he has the title up until WrestleMania 36.

Women’s Royal Rumble match

Confirmed entrants (in the order they were announced)

  • Charlotte Flair
  • Alexa Bliss
  • Nikki Cross
  • Sarah Logan
  • Natalya
  • Carmella
  • Dana Brooke

Prediction: Sasha Banks wins the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble

Only seven female superstars have been announced for this match so the winner can really be anyone. When looking at the confirmed superstars, Flair seems like the likely winner but I am going out of the box in Banks winning here. While the heel combination of her and Bayley has worked nicely on the Blue Brand, this could be a nice starting point for the long-awaited feud between them fans have been looking for.

Again, this is a toss-up and will likely see a lot of surprises here but this should be a good one.

Prediction: Drew McIntyre wins the 2020 Men’s Royal Rumble

Unlike the women’s RR, we pretty much have all the males announced for the match outside of three open spots. My pick to win is McIntyre. Since returning to WWE, fans have been waiting for the big push he no doubt deserves. He has been featured a lot on Raw the past few weeks and I think a potential Lesnar/McIntyre match for the WWE Championship at ‘Mania 36 is something fans will no doubt get behind.

This is a toss-up like the other RR match and it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, specifically how the WWE Champion in Lesnar does as entry #1.

The Royal Rumble match is one of the WWE’s most popular match stipulations. Both matches look to be good ones and there is plenty of options to choose from as the winner. Outside of that, the Universal and both women’s championship matches look to be good ones also.

WWE needs to start off on the right foot heading into The Road to WrestleMania and it starts tonight in Houston. Expect a lot of surprises in both rumble matches.
