NXT will be having another TakeOver special Saturday Night as they head to the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on the eve of WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view. This will be the second time TakeOver will be in Toronto, with their first time being in 2016 the night before Survivor Series.
As usual, five matches are set to take place with all the NXT titles on the line as well as one non-title match. For the first time in NXT history, there will be more than one match involving female superstars. The only time we have seen women on the card was when the NXT Women’s Championship was on the line. It shows that the women’s division is talented and can have their own feuds outside of the title picture.
Here are my predictions for 2019’s NXT TakeOver: Toronto.
Io Shirai vs. Candace LeRae
Prediction: Io Shirai wins
Shirai was a key signing for WWE. She was always aligned with the likes of Kairi Sane and LeRae as a face but turned heel in recent weeks, sporting a new look and saying, “she doesn’t need anyone.”
I think this will be a good match as this is also a great way to LeRae to show what she is all about on the main stage, given this is her first TakeOver event.
I think Shirai wins here. She is being pushed as one of the top heels in NXT and giving her a victory here with her first time as a heel is a good start.
North American Championship – Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Pete Dunne vs. Roderick Strong
Prediction: Roderick Strong wins the North American Championship
I am really looking forward to this match. Dream, Dunne, and Strong are guys you can always count on to but on a great match.
I have Strong winning here to start up my entire prediction of Undisputed Era Faction walking out of TakeOver with all the gold. If Dream drops the belt, I don’t think he’ll get called up just yet. I think he’ll move to the NXT Championship picture.
Tag Team Championship – Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) (c) vs. The Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish)
Prediction: The Undisputed Era win the Tag Team Championship
Street Profits won the then-vacant NXT tag titles back at TakeOver: XXV in a Ladder match to a great crowd reaction.
I am a huge fan of Street Profits and I wish they could have a longer title reign but seeing both Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins making appearances on Raw the past couple of weeks has me thinking that they will be called up sooner rather than later. I really hope that isn’t the case, given I think they may need a little more time to develop and the tag division for the yellow brand.
You also have to consider that NXT is very high on Undisputed Era will all members of the faction at some point holding the gold. It should be an excellent match as both teams have shown they can perform on the big stage. My fantasy booking is to have Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly winning the titles and Street Profits chase for them and have another title match at the next TakeOver.
Women’s Championship – Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Mia Yim
Prediction: Mia Yim wins the Women’s Championship
It is great to see Yim get an opportunity and the character of the face taking down the bully without hesitation is a nice twist.
Time and time again I have said Baszler is more than ready for the main roster and every time I predicted her to drop the title, she retains. I’m gonna go with it again and say Yim wins the NXT Women’s Championship, leading to a more than deserved main roster call-up to The Queen of Spades.
Expect Baszler’s buddies, Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke, to get involved to get their revenge here. Even if Baszler retains, if Yim performs well here and gets a great reaction to the crowd, she’ll be in the title picture once again heading into the next TakeOver.
NXT Championship – Adam Cole (c) vs. Johnny Gargano in Two-out-of-Three Falls match
- The stipulation will change after each fall
- Match One: Singles match (chosen by Cole)
- Match Two: Street Fight (chosen by Gargano)
- Match Three: NXT General Manager William Regal will chose the match type if necessary
Prediction: Adam Cole retains the NXT Championship
Cole/Gargano 3. This is going to be a fantastic match. They tore down the house at TakeOver: New York and XXV and that should be the case once again. With the third stipulation not being mentioned yet, I believe it will go to a third fall, chosen by Regal.
My guess? A Ladder match. It will be a way for Gargano to lose the match but without taking the pinfall to protect. I think Gargano is more than ready for the main roster and after being on the NXT brand for years, the time is perfect to move on. This will also have Undisputed Era walk away with all the men’s NXT titles if all my predictions are correct.
NXT, for years, have had great TakeOver events and the same story could be said for Saturday. If Undisputed Era all walks out of Toronto with the NXT, North American, and Tag Team titles, it will be a perfect ending to one of the best stables in all of professional wrestling.
