On February 29, 2012, WWE developed its own farm system under the WWE umbrella known as NXT. What started out as a weekly tapped show in Full Sail University has expanded to global tours around the world. The shows became so popular that they broadcasted live pay-per-views since 2014, called “NXT TakeOver”
Some fans might say NXT is the best thing going in the WWE and given the history of the matches and storylines, there is definitely an argument. Tonight will be NXT’s 25th TakeOver event (hence the name TakeOver: XXV). The card looks great on paper but that has always been the case here.
Five matches are scheduled for the card as usual with four matches having titles on the line. Here are my predictions for the show.
Matt Riddle vs. Roderick Strong
Prediction: Matt Riddle wins
It may be the only non-title match on the card but Matt Riddle and Roderick Strong can steal the show with their combination of power and technical wrestling styles.
The main story here has been “Can the Undisputed Era could stay on the same page?” and achieving their main goal in gaining all the titles in the NXT Brand. Riddle and Strong have had problems in the weeks leading up to this, which led to their match tonight.
This show itself could potentially be the start of an Undisputed Era breakup and it may start here. Riddle just lost to Velveteen Dream at the last Takeover during WrestleMania weekend and with WWE so high on him, I don’t think he’s going to lose two in a row. Strong losing here will add more to a potential stable breakup.
Vacant Tag Team Championship – Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch vs. The Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish) vs. The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) vs. The Forgotten Sons (Blake Cutler and Wesley Blake) in a Ladder match
Prediction: The Street Profits win the vacant Tag Team Championship
The Vikings Raiders relinquished their NXT Tag Team Championships a few weeks back due to their call-up on Raw during the Superstar Shakeup. With that, we will be guaranteed new champions after the match and it will be under my favorite stipulation, a ladder match.
This is the hardest match to predict here as all four teams have a legit reason as to why they should be NXT tag champions. Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan are the least likely but have shown in past TakeOver that they can hang with the best tag teams. The Forgotten Sons have been pushed recently but have not yet clicked with the crowd. The Street Profits are arguably the most over superstars in NXT and The Undisputed Era are the odds on favorites here.
U.E. could walk away as the first-ever three-time NXT tag champs but I am going with Street Profits here. They have been with the NXT brand for years now and have improved greatly since their debut. Put the titles on them and revive the tag team division that seems so thin with the recent call-ups.
North American Championship – Velveteen Dream (c) vs. Tyler Breeze
Prediction: Tyler Breeze wins the North American Championship
Tyler Breeze made a shocking return to the NXT brand during the Superstar Shake-Up and looks to be on the yellow brand for the long haul. Breeze was never used properly on Raw or SmackDown so it is good to see him back where he belongs.
This will be a great match. Velveteen Dream has gotten better after every TakeOver and has had a good run with the NXT North American title.
I have Breeze winning here to capture his first title ever in WWE. The story could be good here that Breeze can still run with the best of them and could be a potentially longer feud between the two.
Women’s Championship – Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Io Shirai
Prediction: Shayna Baszler retain the Women’s Championship
Shayna Baszler has been the centerpiece of the NXT Women’s division. With superstars like Kairi Sane and Ember Moon, for example, being moved to the main roster, Baszler has continued to be a mainstay in the women’s division.
Baszler should be called up soon but I still think she’ll win here. She has been dominating in all of her title defenses but I good see Io Shirai giving her a hard time here. Have Baszler barely win here then have Shirai win at the next TakeOver.
NXT Championship – Johnny Gargano (c) vs. Adam Cole
Prediction: Johnny Gargano retains the NXT Championship
Their match during WrestleMania weekend was put together last minute and that still brought the house down. Now imagine what they can do with months to prepare?
Straight up this is going to be a fantastic match. Johnny Gargano finally captured the NXT title he has been chasing for years now. Adam Cole is looking to finally capture the thing he has been going for since his debut in August 2017.
With the buildup Gargano was getting for the NXT Championship, I think it is way too early to for him to drop the title. Cole is no doubt next in line for the top prize but that will likely wait at a later time. No doubt we will see Cole’s running buddies involved here somehow like last time.
As we have seen in the past, NXT has produced some fantastic TakeOver events. The product has been great as it has ever been and tonight’s card will show that
The main focal point tonight will be The Undisputed Era and it should be interesting to see who wins here tonight. It is per tradition that superstars who lose will likely be called up to the main roster and that may be the case here.
